Miss Philippine Youth Int'l shares thoughts on PH pageants in Macau

Reigning Miss Philippine Youth International Rikki Mae Dela Pena has said that beauty pageants unite Filipinos and promote local designers, beauty and culture.

“In our country, the Philippines, beauty pageants are a national obsession. It unites Filipinos and it promotes Filipino designers, make-up artists, beauty, and culture.  You can really feel the victory by just watching the candidate from your country do well. Beauty pageants unites Filipinos, indeed," said Dela Pena who shared her thoughts on pageants among foreign teen students during a school presentation.

Dela Pena is now at the University of Macau for an exchange study program.

Asked if she's having a hard time managing her schedule between school and extra-curricular activities as Miss Philippine Youth International, she said: “No. It’s all about time management. This pageant inspires me to do better at school and school serves as my motivation to attend and perform my duties as Miss Philippine Youth International.”

Dela Pena said she idolizes former Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach because of her passion and determination in pageants.

"I really love Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach because of her perseverance in joining beauty pageants. She really motivated me to become stronger in terms of challenges in our lives," she said.

Dela Pena, 20, is a business management student at the University of the Asia and the Pacific in Pasig City. She said that she wants to bridge the experts and fellow millennials who have been victimized by bullying, depression and body-shaming.

Recently, Dela Pena enjoyed her trip to Cebu City where she was the guest of honor at the Abellana National School (ANS).

The teen queen shared with the students from Grade 8-12 her own experiences and tips about goal setting, purpose seeking and attitude shifting.

Dela Pena said that she wants to empower the youth on education. "I want to empower the youth in terms of pursuing education in spite of the challenges they are facing and encourage them to be stronger and protect their mental health as well." - ROBERT REQUINTINA
