William Martinez reveals why Mother Lily turned down 'Bagets'

Now it can be told: actor William Martinez is one of brains behind the blockbuster youth-oriented movie "Bagets" in 1984.

"Ako ang nag-conceptualize ng pelikulang 'Bagets' at ako rin ang nag-isip ng title," said Martinez, during the story conference for the movie "Bakit Nasa Huli ang Simula?" held at B Hotel in Quezon City recently.

"Wala kaming magawa nun ni Tito Douglas (Quijano). Sabi ko Tito Douglas, we have to come up with something new;

"Nung nagbebenta kami ng story, lahat ng batang artista nun bago. Binenta namin ito sa Regal Films pero si Mother Lily wanted to put Edgar Mande, Albert Martinez, Rey "PJ" Abellana, Maricel Soriano, Snooky, and Dina (Bonnevie);

"Ayaw namin, Gusto namin mga bago. So binenta namin kay Vic del Rosario sa Viva Films. Wala pa kaming title nun. Sabi namin kay Vic ang kailangan namin mga artistang bago;

"Sabi niya meron akong bago si Aga Muhlach, JC Bonnin, Raymund Lauchengo, at Herbert Bautista, kakapirma lang sa amin;

"Sabi rin ni Vic bago rin sa kanila si Eula Valdez. Then isang babae na lang ang kulang. Nirekumenda ko si Yayo Aguila. So halos kumpleto na ang cast;

"Ang kulang na lang title. So ang mother ko ay isang alahera. One time, tinitignan niya yung maliliit na alahas. Sabi ko 'mama ano yan?'  Sabi niya 'maliit na alahas ito ang tawag dito ay 'bagets;'

"So pumunta na ako kay Douglas sabi ko may title na tayo 'Bagets.' Anong 'Bagets' sabi ni Douglas. Then sabi ko our movie is about kids na mahal naman natin. They are the precious gems of our lives. Sila ang 'Bagets' ng buhay natin;

"Now we need a good writer and a director. Pinakilala sa amin si Maryo delos Reyes pati si Jake Tordesillas.

"Thirty percent ng buhay na Aga nasa script. Pati na rin si Herbert, 30 percent at JC Bonnin, 30 percent," recalled William.

Asked why he only revealed these details now, William said: "Low-profile lang kasi talaga ako. Ayokong umepal. Ang mentality ko kasi is tahimik lang ako. Ayokong magyabang sa lahat."

William said that he doesn't own to the rights to the movies anymore because it has been sold. But the former matinee idol said that he doesn't want to do a remake of the movie. "Iba na ang panahon ngayon. Maiiba ang storya ng 'Bagets' kung ire-revive uli yun." - ROBERT REQUINTINA
