Former Mr. Gay World titleholder John Raspado admitted that he feels sorry for newly crowned Mr. Gay World Philippines Janjep Carlos "because he has only few weeks to prepare'' for the competition in South Africa.
"Sa tutoo lang, medyo naaawa ako kay Janjep (Carlos) kasi there's little time for him to prepare," said Raspado during an exclusive interview at the Festival Costume Competition for Face of Tourism Philippines 2019 held at the SMX in Pasay City Friday night. (I feel sorry for Janjep because he has little time to prepare).
The Mr. Gay World finals will be held in Cape Town, South Africa from April 28-May 5.
Now based in Baguio City, Raspado was in Metro Manila to serve as one of the judges for the preliminary competition of Face of Tourism Philippines 2019 pageant. The grand finals of the tourism-driven contest will be held at the SMX Mall of Asia in Pasay City on Sunday, April 7.
Raspado said that in his case, he prepared for several months for the competition in Madrid, Spain where he later emerged a winner in the prestigious gay contest. He is also the first Asian winner.
Carlos was runner-up to Raspado in the Mr. Gay World Philippines 2016 competition. This year, Carlos will aim to duplicate Raspado's feat in the same contest abroad.
Asked if Carlos has a strong chance of winning, Raspado said: "He has a big chance given na may proper training siya. But you know in pageantry, timing is everything. You may have it all now pero kung hindi para sa'yo, hindi talaga para sa'yo."
Raspado recalled becoming a judge at the Mr. Gay World pageant in 2018. "Madugo talaga yung search. Walang patawad iyong ibang judge." (The search is 'bloody.' Some judges have 'no mercy.')
Last year, Raspado remembered several judges who gave 1 point to some candidates. "They don't settle for 7 or 8 points. It's either you hate it or you like it. If you like the candidate, then give 10 points. If you don't like the guy, then 1 point."
Raspado said that the Mr. Gay World contest appears to be looking for intellectuals. "If you don't know how to speak in English, it will surely not impress them (judges and organizers)."
He also said that he has seen some of the candidates for this year's competition. "I've seen some of them. Carlos has a big chance."
While waiting for his papers to be approved so that he could settle in Australia with his partner of five years, Raspado said that he is currently engage in property development supplies and sewerage system. "I was caught up with it."
* Jealous type
Between Raspado and his partner who is based in Australia, the former Mr. Po-Gay winner admits that he is the jealous-type.
"Iyong pagiging seloso, that's part of a relationship. It could make or break you. Pag-hindi nag-jealous ang partner, wa siya care. Mas gusto ko magselos ka para maintindihan kita."
Raspado said that he and his partner want to adopt a baby in the future. "Pwede rin."
* Wilbert Tolentino
Raspado said that he has not spoken with Tolentino for quite sometime now because he stays in Baguio City these days.
Sought to give a message to Tolentino, Raspado said: "Siyempre mentor ko pa rin siya kahit papaano. I hope ipagpatuloy pa rin niya ang kaniyang mga magagandang plano para sa Mr. Gay World Philippines." - ROBERT REQUINTINA
